A man with a priest's collar reached out his hand and helped pull me into the unadorned bowl of the 17th-century fountain, which had been turned off for repairs. I had come to see Pope Benedict XVI's final audience. To watch a pope who was still alive leave office - a church first in more than half a millennium. Several thousands had the same idea. Serendipity had been my guide through the whole experience. I met John Fernandez, a devout Catholic from New York, on the plane to Rome from London. He offered to help me get audience tickets that would get me into St. Peter's Square. A much better fate than joining the overflow crush that would fill the Via della Conciliazione, the broad boulevard that runs from the gates of the Vatican all the way to the Tiber River. The bellman at my hotel across from the Pantheon directed me where to walk in the warren of alleys that would lead to the North American Pontificate near the Trevi Fountain. Waiting there was Sister Catherina, a Carmelite nun from St. Louis, who handed me the tickets. Then she walked photographer Michael Goulding and me to a taxi, telling the driver in Italian to take a back way to St. Peter's that would circumvent the hundreds of police directing traffic away from the already overflowing crowds. We often spend thousands of dollars to visit re-creations of something old - a famous castle or church, Civil War battlefield or presidential homestead. But history isn't something that stops.
